About this Recovery Place

The Voice Hub was established in 2014 following talks that there was a need for a Recovery drop-in centre in Gwent, South Wales.

Originally the Hub operated out of one main room with a kitchen attached for teas and coffee. We saw a quiet period where no one attended and wondered if it would take off as expected.

Then slowly but surely people started to attend and pretty soon we were overwhelmed with the amount of clients who came in on a day to day basis.

The Hub is run by volunteers and the original building had no paid staff in the building.

Volunteers created groups from scratch such as

  • Increasing Motivation
  • Stress and Anxiety
  • Dealing with Change
  • Mental Health in Recovery
  • Job Clubs/CV writing
  • Money Management and lots more.

Our first summer saw the start of our popular Curry and quiz nights. We were able to cook in-house as our small but well-equipped kitchen (previously a café) had a cooker left behind so this drew people in and at one time we counted 22 people in the room which was very cramped but great fun. People sat wherever they could and the family feel was infectious.

By the time our first year had ended, it was clear that we were going to need a bigger boat!

Through lots of property searches, we finally found the 3 storey building which is our current Hub.

Work began in late 2015 and the transformation began with the empty shell that was to be the drop-in centre.

During this work, the upper floors were open and paid staff began working from the Hub. Progress was painfully slow at times but essential so that we got the rooms looking how we wanted.

Finally, the new Hub opened in March 2016 and we were bigger and better than ever before.

The Volunteer team work hard dealing with complex clients and assist in providing them with the necessary skills they need to lead a productive life. Their tireless efforts make the Hub what it is, gives us our fantastic reputation and makes us all very proud to be a part of this recovery community and family.

The schedule is packed here at the Hub and over 5 days each week we run a whole range of groups, classes and activities, thee include:

  • Increasing Motivation
  • SMART recovery
  • Cooking on a Budget
  • Recovery Discussion groups
  • Walking Group
  • Peer led Mental Health Support Group
  • Mindfulness
  • Plan your day
  • Auricular Acupuncture and much more.

Our schedule is updated every month with new courses suggested by our clients based on what they feel will help them on their recovery journey and increase the chances of permanent change.

The Recovery community is huge and growing all the time.

Where there was just one Recovery Hub in Gwent, there are now 7 following on from the success and demand in Newport.

We are very proud to be the flagship for our county, leading the way in recovery, giving hope and strength to those who come through our doors each day in varying stages of recovery.

Here, you are guaranteed the warmest welcome, the best tea and coffee because it’s free to all, and the best support there is to offer, and of course, the patience of our volunteers to help find a way around things.

One of our sayings is ‘we don’t do problems, we do solutions’ and we stand by that. We have strong links with supporting agencies so that we can signpost our clients so that they get the very best support.

We welcome any visitors to the Hub and the grand tour of the whole building is a must.

We have two separate entrances.  The first is on School lane, just look for the inconspicuous white doors and the Hub drop in entrance can be found up the cobbled lane at the side of Boots the chemist in the heart of the city centre.

We are open each week day from 10am to 4pm and everyone is welcome.

Upcoming event with CA in Newport. Why not go along and see what they are all about:

All newcomers to the fellowship are welcome and can enter free of charge. It’s a great opportunity for newcomers to get a feel for the fellowship and experience exactly what is on offer.

We have members coming from all over the country to share their experience, strength and hope with us, explaining precisely how they moved from the problem of drug/alcohol addiction to the solution of recovery. There will also be food and a raffle. These events are really fun, upbeat days full of unity and really demonstrate to those who are yet to find recovery that there is a life after drugs/alcohol!
